Berthold and Gustav joined the party when Ludwig Wagner, Priest of Ulric, a mercenary to the Helmgart garrison, was not able to embark into the Grey Mountains with the heroes.
Willi Brandt, adjutant to the Markgraf of Helmgart, seeing the opportunity to exploit the generosity of the heroes to accompany Skalfkragella "Ella" Karginsdottir to Groz Zorn, parted with two of his still healthy men. To Willi this was far better that sending six healthy troops with Ella on a relic chase.
Gustav and Berthold do not know the heroes and will guard 'Ella more than advance into danger at the behest of an Elf, though a Priest of Sigmar and Dwarf carry more respect. Both defer often to 'Ella for action before blindly following the command of the stranger's, despite Ludwig's admonition to listen to any "senior" party member.
The elf's "merciful" dispatching of the insane lumberjack found in the camp did not sit well with Gustav. Gustav bit his tongue when 'Ella's tacitly approved of the action (it was leave him poorly playing his pan-flute and starving to death, refusing to eat, or abandon the mission to Groz Zorn for the sake of the crazy lumberjack). Neither sat well, and without the mercies of Shallya, his merciful delivery to Morr was chosen without argument.
Berthold and Gustav carried torches in the upper deep of Groz Zorn. Berthold joined the heroes in melee with a giant spider that had made the deep's upper armory home. Gustav stood by 'Ella during the engagement, as she was frozen in horror by the discovery of the fate of so many of the inhabitants of the lost hold.
Gustav, later watching 'Ella as she searched the upper deep's library for the healing tome, contracted, along with 'Ella, Kruts. The spore covered large portions of the libraries books. Disturbed by a goblin sentry, the spore exploded and the heroes were lucky not to catch "the itch" as well.
